frequently asked questions
How can I become a part of Sigma Psi Zeta?
To become a SYZter, you first need to go to our recruitment week and meet the attendance and GPA requirements. You must attend 1 General Interest Meeting and 2 other events, and have a cumulative GPA of 2.70 or higher. Upon meeting these requirements, you will qualify for an interview, which is a chance for us to get to know you better in a more personal setting. If you are offered a bid and decide to accept it, you will then go through our New Member Education process and begin your journey to SYZterhood!
Do I have to be Asian to become a Sigma?
Absolutely not! We are one of the most diverse organizations on campus and work in collaboration with many communities and identities to advocate for issues within all our communities. We welcome womxn of all backgrounds to join our SYZterhood. As a sorority with a history of Asian American advocacy, we promote Asian and Asian-American cultures and experiences on our respective campuses. Regardless of ethnicity, we learn a lot about other traditions and heritages, sharing them with our community.

What can I expect from a “typical” Sigma?
There is no “typical” Sigma. SYZterhood is not a mold for womxn to fit into, nor does it define a person's character. Each SYZter contributes their talent, idealism, devotion, and energy to Sigma Psi Zeta, giving our SYZterhood the character it has today. With the unique bonds and special memories formed as SYZters, we hope that each member will change our SYZterhood, helping it to grow and evolve through time.

What happens during recruitment?
SYZters and potential new members participate in fun, engaging activities in order to get to know one another. During the recruitment time, potential new members will learn about Greek Life, the history of Sigma Psi Zeta, our values, and what we do. All events are free of charge, non-binding, and alcohol/substance-free.
What is a bid and how do I get one?
A bid is a formal invitation to join a sorority. In order to be eligible, a candidate must attend one General Interest Meeting and two other events during recruitment week and be interviewed by a panel of SYZters.
What is an intake?
After recruitment week, a candidate who is offered and accepts a bid will become an intake. During the intake process, new members learn about the traditions and history of Sigma Psi Zeta. They also establish bonds of SYZterhood within the intake class and with active SYZters. The intake process is a unique experience - a time to create lasting memories and friendships, as well as to develop leadership and time management skills. Sigma Psi Zeta strictly follows the university and our own national rules against hazing and the mistreatment of intakes.
What is the time commitment for the intake process and will it affect my academics?
The intake process takes time, but it is definitely manageable. Furthermore, the amount of time that you devote to it depends on you. The more time you put in, the more valuable your experience will be. As a sorority, we strive for academic excellence and will always put your academic performance first. The SYZters are there to support and help you along the way!

I hear that Greek Organizations haze. Does Sigma do that?
No, Sigma Psi Zeta does NOT haze. Rather, we enforce a strict, non-hazing policy. After all, our organization’s national philanthropy is “to combat the violence against womxn.” With this in mind, we are against the disrespect of womxn in all its myriad forms. Subsequently, we do not mentally, physically, or emotionally degrade our new members. To do so would work against the ties of loyalty, allegiance, and dedication that we aim to create.

Does Sigma Psi Zeta have a brother fraternity?
No, Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. does NOT have a brother fraternity. As a sorority that comprises of strong, independent womxn, we have made the deliberate choice to remain unaffiliated with another Greek organization.
